40 percent of Rosario's children have obesity problems

According to a study carried out at the end of 2019, 40 percent of Rosario's children between the ages of 5 and 17 have obesity problems. Also, a percentage of 30 percent of children under 5 years old are overweight. At a national level, the figures are quite similar and, at a global level, this problem affects more and more young people. Sedentary lifestyles and poor nutrition contribute to the fact that more and more children suffer from obesity. Also, the time spent in front of the screens and the lack of restrictions on advertising unhealthy foods make the problem even more acute.

Alarming figuresAccording

to a national and regional study conducted through consultations in health centres across the country, the children most affected by the problems of obesity and overweight are between 10 and 14 years old.

Both nationally and in the city of Rosario, a percentage of 40 percent presented some symptom of overweight; of the total, 24 percent of Rosario's children have obesity problems. Among children under 5, in Argentina only 13 percent have some symptom of excess weight, while in Rosario that figure rises to 30 percent. These results do not show differences in terms of gender, since half of the total correspond to girls and the other half to boys. Likewise, there are no differences regarding socioeconomic level.

RecommendationsSpecialists

indicate that overweight problems are easier to treat with a balanced diet and exercise.

However, if the child is obese, which is calculated based on the body mass index taking into account his/her weight and height, he/she will have to be referred to a specialist who will help him/her not only to lose weight, but also to incorporate the necessary nutrients to lead a healthy life. Some recommendations to prevent children from having overweight problems are the following:

  • Avoid sedentary lifestyle and physical activity or sports
  • Avoiding sweets and opting instead for yoghurt, cereals and fruit
  • Don't skip meals and control portion sizes
  • Consume water and fruit juice instead of soda
  • Follow a balanced diet
The problem of overweight and obesity in children affects more and more children. In Rosario, 40 percent of children between 5 and 17 years old have problems of overweight and, of that total, the most affected young people are between 10 and 14 years old. As for those under 5, 13 percent present symptoms of overweight. This problem should not be ignored and a specialist should be consulted to treat the symptoms as soon as possible.

Some recommendations will prevent children from suffering from this problem, but obesity requires specialized treatment.
